Activities:

Sampai
Monthly Sampais are major event at our Center. We chant, receive and give Jyorei, and learn more about our founder Mokichi Okada’s teachings. This sampai is in English with translation into Chinese. Usually it is at 10:00 AM on the third Sunday of the month.

Sampai in Chinese takes place every Sunday morning at 10:00 AM (except for the Sunday on which Monthly Sampai is held).

Natural Agriculture
We rent a portion of land at The Rodale Institute in Kutztown Pennsylvania to practice Natural Agriculture. Participants have their own plots and grow their favorite vegetables and herbs. More than half of the gardeners are members of the Shumei New York Center. Pennsylvania Shumei members garden there also. Although we knew very little about growing vegetables when we started in 2000, we have come to understand the significance of living in harmony with nature.

Our Center, along with all other Shumei Centers in North America, promotes the Makoto Wheat Project. This project shares the bounty of Shumei’s Natural Agriculture wheat farm in Canada with the North American Shumei community.

Taiko
Some members of the New York Center play taiko drums, both as an individual ensemble and together with the Makoto Taiko Group from Pasadena, CA. For more information about taiko and Shumei’s involvement in this art form, please see www.ShumeiTaiko.org.

Sharing Jyorei
Members of the Shumei New York Center share Jyorei in public at Grand Central Station the fourth Sunday of every month. We sometimes also participate in local fairs and expos.
